ABB’s flameproof range of motors are basically up-rated Process Performance motors, these motors are suitable for use in ZONE 1 Gas Environments. The motor enclosure has been designed in such a way that no internal explosion can be transmitted to the explosive atmosphere surrounding the motor. The standard flameproof motors are rated as Category 2G, Motor Grouping IIB, Temperature Class T4 (max permitted 135°c), this can be increased to IIC / T6 on request. All ABB hazardous area motors are ATEX certified.

ABB’s Non-sparking range of motors are suitable for use in ZONE 2 Gas Environments. The motors are designed in such a way that no sparks can occur in normal operation, and used within the ratings specified by the manufacturer, which excludes thermal requirements due to starting or accidental stalling. The standard non-sparking motors are rated as Category 3G, Motor Grouping II, Temperature Class T3 (max permitted 200°c)

ABB’s Dust Ignition Proof Motors (DIP) are suitable for use in either ZONE 21 or ZONE 22 Dust Environments. The motor itself is dust ignition proof which means no potentially explosive atmosphere can penetrate inside the motor. The ingress of dust into the motor is prevented by the IP protection being either IP55 or IP65. The standard ZONE 21 motors are rated as Category 2D, IP65 – T125°C with the ZONE 22 rated as Category 3D, IP55 – T125°C.
ABB’s Dual Zone Motors are suitable for use in hazardous environments where there is the potential for both Gas and Dust to be present. These motors can be rated for example as suitable for ZONE 1 / ZONE 21.
